Alternate terms: Rest preparation.
A "rest" is a projection, generally made of metal, on which the framework for a removable partial denture is supported by an anchor tooth (which is called an "abutment"). "Rest preparations" can be shaped in various ways, but are typically designed so that the metal rest from the denture framework can nest inside the natural anatomical contours of the abutment tooth's biting surface, without placing tipping forces on the tooth.
